Nomos Pierias
This area of Greece is situated near the Aegean sea and directly borders Thesal�a, the area found directly south of it. Streaching from the narrow pass just South of Olympus mountain to near Thesaloniki in the North, it covers a wide area. It offers beautiful tourist seaside beaches as well as the majesty of Mount Olympus.
In ancient times, and during the reign of Alexander the Great, the area underwent massive growth especially because it contained Mount Olympus, which according to Mythology was the seat of Zeus (Th�as in Greek). There is much to see, many beaches to sunbathe and more to do, as Katerini has a big chunk of Greek coastline to its area.

Transport
By bus you can get here from Athens and there are various schedules all taking about7 hours to Katerini (info: 01/8317059) while from Thesaloniki, the trip takes 1 hour, hourly (info: 031/ 519101).
By train, there is more than one train per day from Athens and Thesaloniki, and it takes 6h30m (info: 01/5240646) from Athens, and 1h20m from Thesaloniki (info: 031/ 519101).
Locally Katerini is connected with L�risa, V�los, S�rres, Dr�ma, Ks�nthi, Komotin� and Alexandroupoli.
MOUNT OLYMPUS
A good reason for a visit and the ability of a climb right up to the 2917 meter mark (9100 feet) make this stop a must for afficionados. You can go up from either Litoh�ri or Vrispopoules. First refuge is at 1100 meters and called Stavr�s (info: 0352/81944), followed by Spilios Agapit�s at 2100 meters (info: 0352/81800) and then the peak M�tikas. Another way up is through the King P�vlos refuge which is at an altitude of 2650 meters (0352/81944) and the Gi�sos Apostol�des refuge at 2760 meters (info: 031/224710) and then the peak. If you do go up, ensure you have adequate water, good hiking shoes and sweater with you (even in the midst of the hot Greek summer, there is snow at the peak!).
DION

Ancient ruins, a temple and stadium indicate the location of this city, founded in the 5th century BC. A tomb dating back from 230BC with statues also add to the interest. |
